What is a right? New Magna Carta Medium

Where do rights come from?

Who should judge which freedoms and rights are more important?

How do we balance individual rights with group responsibilities?

How can we maximise freedom while protecting the rights of others?

How do we remain free and open in the face of terrorism, crime and authoritarian government?

You are a free person who is free to do as you choose so long as your behaviour does not contravene democratically made law, significantly harm others, undermine democracy or national security or contravene the rights of others. Exceptions include those who present a serious danger to the public or to themselves due to violence, mental illness, intoxication, infectious disease or lack of capacity. Foreigners do not have the right to vote or stand for election, and have no right to public services or benefits unless specifically granted by a democratic decision.
