18.10 Courts must be independent in practice and democratically accountable in principle

The courts must be independent in their administration of justice in any particular case. They New Magna Carta Mediummust be free from political, financial, personal or security influences. They must also be democratically accountable so that they represent the prevailing values of the public. They must operate according to the best scientific and legal practices in their administration of justice.
