9.2 Doubt and scepticism are powerful tools – use them wisely

We have become cautious about asserting the truth because the overconfident assertion of New Magna Carta Mediumtruth has caused harm in the past. Doubt and scepticism are two of the most powerful strengths of Western Civilization. We have used these with great effect to deconstruct the superstitions and traditions of the past and to open ourselves to reason and science. Unfortunately, science and reason are unable to give a satisfactory explanation of everything that we need to understand. Fundamentalist relativism asserts that there is no truth (other than its own premise); all truth is subjective; your truth is your truth and my truth is my truth. Held lightly, that is a helpful way of thinking. Taken to the extreme, it makes it impossible for society to operate because we can’t agree on anything. If you can’t make assertions of truth, then you can’t make judgements, and if you can’t make judgements, you are unable to make choices. If you can’t distinguish right from wrong, good from bad, truth from falsehood, then we can’t get along together.
